Places of Interests under South West Garo Hills District


KODALDHOWA
Situated about eight kilometers from the head quarters of Zikzak Block Develop ment Office and nearest to the village Nogorpara where the 'Katta Beel' exists, the village Kodaldhowa has also a legend pond or water tank with a mixed population of 410 in '1981.



The village owes its name, Kodaldhowa to a pond which had been excavated by the same legendary king Rengtha who had ex cavated 'Katta Bil' and whose nickname was Pagla Raja. This pond was excavated to wash the spades everyday while digging Katta Beel at Nogorpara. Kodhaldhowa Pond spreads over an area of 14 bighas of land which is smaller than Katta Bil. The adjacent village to the pond had been named after the pond. The villagers are mostly Hajongs. This pond had been long neglected and thus covered with weeds. Nearby a small temple was constructed by the villagers which has an underground entrance to go down to this pond.

CHENGA - BENGA & THE WATER TANK


Legend has it that Chenga and Benga were two holy men who did much for the upliftment and benefit of the local natives. The Chenga - Benga tank is situated a few furlongs west of Balapara tank and is almost of the same size and depth with the latter. The legend about this tank is that there are treasures inside this tank also. It is also stated that on certain days of full moon, pious and fortunate persons can see golden vessels. Utensils floating on the surface of water like the leaves of lotus. Legend further says that in olden days "dastea" of God could even collect these vessels and use them in religions rites and rituals and then return them. This may be part of the fantasy world of ancient Kamrupa, the Centre of the "Tantric" Cult.




MIR JUMLA'S TOMB
Near Ferryghat, on the approach to Thankuranbari lies the tomb of a great Mughal general Mir Jumlah who was instrumental in the Mughal expedition to the East/ North East during Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb' rule. Sir Edward Gait in his exceptional book "a history of Assam" has detailed Mir Jumla’s exploits as follows. "When Mir Jumla was made governor of Bengal and had occupied Dacca (now Dhaka) after the flight of Prince Suja to Arakan, Jayadhvaj Singh who ascended the throne of "the Ahom Kingdom in November 1648 sent and 
the Koches and that he was prepared to hand it over to any officer whom the governor might send for the purpose. Rashid Khan was accordingly deputed to receive back the imperial lands but Jayadhvaj Singh sent a letter to Rashid Khan calling upon him to withdraw his troops. These matters were duly reported against Pran Narayan the King of Koch Bihar. When appointed viceroy of Bengal, Mir Jumla had been specially enjoined by Aurangzeb to "Punish the lawless Zamindars of the province especially those of Assam and Magh (Aracan) who had caused injury and molestation to the Muslims". Mir Jumla occupied Koch Bihar but failed to capture the King Pran Narayan who escaped to Bhutan. He left a garrison of five thousand men in Koch Bihar and then on 4th January 1662 set forth on his invasion of Assam, Rashid Khan joined him at Pangamati but the local Zamindars thinking it impossible that he could defeat the Ahoms, held aloof. Owing to the dense jungle and the numerous rivers the journey was most tedious and the daily marches rarely exceed four or five miles.

At last, after may delays he arrived opposite the Ahom fort at Jogighopa with a force of twelve thousand horse and thirty thousand on foot. The garrison which was suffering from some violent epidemic diseases, possible cholera, had a total strength of only twelve thousand was, overrunned by this formidable army and after a very faint-hearted resistance evacuated the fort and beat a hasty retreat to Saraighat and Pandu.

Mir Jumlah now divided his army into two divisions, one of which marched up the South bank of the Brahmaputra while he himself, with the main body crossed the Monas by a bridge of boats and advanced along the north bank. The fleet kept pace with the army. It comprised a number of ghrabs or large vessels carrying about fourteen guns and about fifty or sixty men, each of which was in tow of four Kosahs or lighter boats propelled by oars. Most of the ghrabs were in charge of European officers, amongst whom Portuguese Predominated. The total number of vessels of all kinds was between three and four hundred.

On receiving news of the loss of Jogighopa Jayadhvaj Singh hastily dispatched large reinforcements to Saraighat and Pandu, but the Muhammadan arrived before them. The Ahom forces again declined an engagement. The troops on the north bank fled to Kajali so rapidly as to escape a turning movement by a detachment under Rashid Khan. Those South of rivers were not so fortunate; they were overtaken by flying force and large numbers of them were killed. The fort of Saraighat which was at Guahati (now Guwahati) which at this time was wholly or chiefly on the north bank of the river was occupied on the 4th of February 1662. A fort at Beltola succumbed to a night attack and the garrison was put to the sword.
After halting three days at Gauhati where the Darrang King came in and made his submission. Mir Jumla started on his march for Gargaon and Ahomcapital. Half way to Samdhara the whole Army crossed to the South bank in boats, the passage occupying two days. The Dimarue Raja sent in his nephew to attend in the Nawab and explain his own absence on the grounds of sickness.
The advance along the South bank continued, and on the 20th February, the Army encamped so near the Ahom fort of Simlagarh that a cannon ball fired from it passed over the Nawabs' tent. This fleet occupied a very strong strategic position. To avoid the loss of life which would have been involved in storming it, siege was decided on. Gradually under heavy fire trenches or covered ways, were carried close up to the walls. A night attack on these trenches was re pulsed though with difficulty and a night or two later (on the 25th February) the
final assault was delivered. The resistance made by the defenders was comparatively feeble and as soon as they found that the wall had been scaled and the gate broken open they fled without attempting to save their guns and other war material, all of wh ich fell into the hands of the victors. On entering the place next day. Mir Jumlah was surprised at the strength of the fortifications and in" iew of the bravery of the Ahom soldiers at this period, it is difficult to explain why a more stubbom defence was not made. Possibly it was because on this, as on many other occasions they had the misfor tune to be under inefficient or timid leaders. On the fall of Simlagarh the garrison of Samdhara lost heart and having destroyed their store of gunpoweredfled without waiting to be attacked Mil' J umlah placed a garrison in Samdhara and appointed aMuhammadan official as Faujdar of Kolibar. Mil' Jumlah rested his army for 3 days at Kolaibar and then continued his march. The march was continued to Salagarh which the Ahom evacauated on the approach of the Muhammadans. At this place several Ahomofficials appeared with letters from Jayadhvaj Singh asking for peace. Gi"en the situation Jayadhvaj Singh sent orders to the commanders on both banks to concentrate at Lakhua.

The Dihigvias so shallow above its junction with the Brahmaputra that it was impossible for the fleet to go further. Mir Jumlah therefore left it atLakhua. After halting there for three days during which time he was joined by a number of deserters from the Ahom cause, he set out with his land forces along the direct road to Garhgaon. Debargaon was reached in two days. The third day he halted and on the fourth hen marched to Gajput. Here he heard of the flight of the Raja and at once despatched a flying column with all speed to Garhgaon to seize the elephants and other property which had not already been removed. Next day the main nody encamped at the mouth of the Dikhy and the day following, the 17th march, the Nawab enteredGarhgaon and occupied the Rajas' palace. Eighty two elephants and nearly three lakh of rupees worth of gold and silver were found at Garhgaon and also about 170 storehouses each containing from one to ten thousand maunds of rice.
it is said that Mir Jumlah opened a mint at Garhgaon and caused money to strick there in the name of the Delhi Emperor. The muhammadans occupied a number of villages whose inhab itants soon began to accept the position and to settle down quaitly under their new rulers.
It was Nawabs' intention to spend the rainy season at Lakhau, but three days continuous downpour indicated an early commencement of the monsoon, and as the captured elephants were not yet fully trained and could not be got to work properly and without them it was impossible to transport in time the boot)' taken at Garhgaon it was resolved instead to camp at Mathurapur, village on high ground seven miles south-east ofGarhgaon.
By this time the rains had set in, Jocomotion became difficult and the real troubles of the invaders began. The Ahoms, took advantage of the inclemency of the season to cut off communications and supplies to seize and kill all straggters from the main body and to harass the Muhammadam garrison by repeated surprises, especially at night.
With the progress of the rains, Mir Jumlah found it more and more difficult to maintain his outpost, and they were withdrawn to Garhgaon and Mathurapur. These places alone remained in his hands. All the rest country was reoccupied by the Ahoms and Jayadhvaj Singh returned from Namrup to Solahiri only four stages distant from Garhgaon. Even Garhgaon and Mathurpur were closely invested that, if a man ventured to leave the camp, he was certain to be shot.
The Ahoms renewed their attacks upon Garhgaon. The Muhammadans were now reduced to severe straits. They were exposed to constant attacks both by day and by night. The only food generally obtainable was coarse rice and times. Salt was sold at thirty rupees per seer, butter at fourteen rupees a seer, and opium at sixteen rupees a tola. Fever and dysentery became terrible prevalent and a detachment which numbered fifteen hundred men at the begin ning ofthe war was reduced to five hundred. Many horses and draught cattle also died. To add to his troubles Mir Jumlah heard that Prann Narayan had returned and driven out the garrison he had left in Koch Bihar. The troops, commanders and common soldiers alike had become utterly dispir ited and they thought only of return ing to their own houses.
Towards the end of September, howeve, the rains ceased and communications became cas ier. Larger quantities of fresh supplies of all kinds were sent from Lakhua and reached Garhgaon about the end of October. The Mughals quickly recovered their morals. The land having dried-up their country were once more able to operae and Jayadhvaj Singh and his nobles again fled to Namrup. but again difficulties arose. Owing to famine in Bengal, further supplies were not forth coming. Mir Jumlah fell seriously ill and could travel only by palanquin; and his troops were so discontended that large numbers threatened to desert farther than enter the pestilential climate ofNamrup or risk having to pass another rainy season in Garhgaon. Mir Jumlah was thus com pelled to listen to the Rajas' repeated overtures and peace was agreed to . A treaty was concluded accordingly and on the 9th january 1663 to the intense joy of his army. Mir Jumla gave the order to return to Bengal.

The main nody of the army marched down the South bank of the Brahmaputra as far as Singiri Parbat, where it crossed to the North bank Mir Jumlah himself traveled by palki from Gargoan to lakhua by boat from lakhua to Kolibar and from thence by palki to Kajalimukh a distance of eighty four miles. Mir Jumlah rested a few days at Kajali and while here (on the 7th February 1663) the army was frightened by a terrible storm of thunder and lightening followed by a severe earthquake, the shocks of which continued for half an hour. From Kajali a move was made to Guahati where Rashid Khan was installed against his will, as Fanjdar.
The Nawab who had a reapse at Kajali, now became dangerously ill and was to proceed direct to Dacca. He grew rapidly worse and died just before his ship reached Dacca on the 30th March 1663. His mortal remains were buried in the hillock at Thakuranbari near Mankachar

SHAH KAMAL DURGAH – DARGAH SHARIF
After a few minutes drive from Mahendraganj four kilometers to the north on the Kalaichar road it is common experience to see people getting down from their vehicles and ad vance a few steps to pay homage to Deer Shah Kamal and drop a few coins through the opening of a tubular Iron chest embedded by the side of the road. There is a Durgah (Sacred Place) known as Shah Kamal Durgah. This is the burial place of the last remains of Shah Kamal and his Garo wife.

There are two versions of lore and legend related to the Durgah. One of the leg ends is that during the rule of Raja Mahendra Narayan (Zamindar ofKaraibari) a demon was creating havoc to his riots killing and devouring them. The Peer Shah Kamal, by dint of his Super natural power, drove away the demon and restored peace in his kingdom. The Raja as a token of gratitude donates 1280 bighas of land including the present hillock, the seat of the Durgah, as a gift to the peer. This is still known as Pirpal Baklai estate.

                      The other story goes that the king Rengtha was an ardent worshipper of goddess Kali being a follower of Hinduism. To appease this goddess he used to sacrifice a person every night from each household of his subjects. Once 
were very sad arguing who would go on that night replace him in their place on that night, so that he could use his inner strength and medicinal power over that goddess or evil spirit. On that night as midnight approached, that evil spirit came and tried to suck the blood of Shah Kamal and had to fight with him severely. Shah Kamal used all his strength both physical, medicinal and killed it ultimately and became the winner in the fight. To show him respect and gratefulness, the widow Nakatchi gave away her daughter to be is wife. After that fight there was no fear of evil spirit and any more killing or sacrifice.
                         
                        After the death of Shah Kamal and his Garo wife, this burial place was con structed overlooking Bangladesh, still the graves of the couple can be seen on this Durgah. This is maintained by the Fakir Sawayat worshipers. After the British occupation of this district, these lands were treated as rent-free land which was called Peerpal Baklai Estate. It is overlooking the Bangladesh region on the top of a hill where every year Muslims, Hindus and Garos assemble to celebrate the occasion as an annual mela


                   To show his respect and love for Shah Kamal, the king Agani excavated a big water tank two kilometers Far from the Durgah. It is called Katta Beel or "Chimite" which means water God and spreads over eighty bigha of land. The plain land is being used for growing paddy by the local people there. It was also believed that the Katta Beel of Shah Kamal was associated with some supernatural events. Drinking of water from this tank was forbidden or else the pollu tion of the water brought some misfortune. Milk and other offerings placed on the bank of this tank used to flow into the middle of the tank and the containers used to return to the bank empty. This big water tank was encircled with weeds and trees. At present those surrounding trees are being cut by the farmers for use of the land for cultivation. One such tree was cut down and it started flowing like blood which continued for more than six months and it was seen by the villagers. Hindus still offer milk and other gifts to this tank. Garos believed that Sangkni or water serpent lived here. It was very clean water except on the banks.

History of Ampati

AMPATI SINCE 1899 A.D.
In 1899 A.D. five families of Boldakgre converted to Christianity and Baptized by Dr. E.G. Phillips, American Baptist Missionary.
After conversion finding difficulties to live among the non-Christian and facing hardships in jhum cultivation the five families of converts decided to leave Boldakgre once and for all. On learning that some uncultivated and uninhabited lands are lying under the Aking land of Dalbotpara and Chelipara they left their native place and came to settle under the Dalbotpara Aking land. The five families of converts are
I. Babang Marak - Dongme G. Sangma
2. Ringran Sangma - Rimchi Sangma
3. Mibal Sangma - Sangre G. Sangma

4. Diron Marak - Okgil G. Sangma

5. Birin M. Marak - Nuchong Sangma
These five families were first settlers of present Ampati. They first settled near Daban Bheel beside the plate rock which is called "Ampatchi" meaning mat for drying paddy and from the word "Ampatchi" the place's name became "Ampati".
There is a legend that the plate rock was used by some legendary inhabitants for drying paddy. It is said that once one Elephant ate the paddy from that rock and the elephant was chased away by one "Matgrik" and it was killed with only single blow at a place and now the elephant has turned into a stone and that place was called "Hatisil" means "Hati" elephant "sil" means stone. Both the plate rock and the rock which look like an elephant can still be seen at Chigitchakgre and Hatisil respectively.
The five new settlers of Ampati excavated paddy fields near present Ampati (but living on the other side of the Daru river it is difficult for them to cross every now and then for tilling their lands. So they have started collecting materials and sites for construction of houses at present Ampati. At first Dinggan Gaakpa Nokma and Maharis of Chillipara refused to let them settle at their proposed place, and the materials like bamboo, log etc. collected for construction of houses were destroyed by them. But by careful manipulation of Babang A. Marak, and repeated requests by others they were allowed to settle at present Ampati. Since then their descendants are settling at present Ampati.
After settling permanently, those settlers felt that a School was necessary for their children and their grandchildren and with the aid of "Baptist Mission" a school was established in 1903 with Jatong Ch. Marak as Pondit.
With the increased in conversion to Christianity the Christian members increased, and Ampati was converted to the status of Church, in 5th February 1927. The Church was inaugu­rated on 26-27 February 1927 with the blessing of Rev. R.H.E. Wing, Rev. Rujeng Arengh, Rev. Tokan Sangma, Asian D. Shira, Pastor.
The spread of and missionary zeal people of the area awarded the value of education, and by that time one Garo youth by the name of Gracesh G. Sangma, son of Choetsing D. Sangma, the first among the Garos’ of the area to study in Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Serampore College, inspired for opening M.E. School. Unfortunately Gracesh G. Sangma, who was serving in Royal Air Force died prematurely in 1946 after a brief illness while he was on leave. Inspired by Gracesh Sangma, Noho B. Sangma of Darugre convened a meeting of elders and resolved for opening M.E. School at Ampati. Consequently in 1947 an Upper Primary School was established with Noho B.Sangma, as headmaster. The School was stopped for some time in the beginning of 1948 due to some controversial matters between the headmaster Judson Sangma and students. After convening a meeting the village elders decided to appoint a new Headmaster, and from among the contenders Shri Nolidi S. Daring was persuaded to serve as Headmaster. Since 1947 to 2007 the school is functioning for 60 years.
After eleven years of establishment of M.E. School at Ampati opening of H.E. School was materialized with Mr. Nolidi S. Daring as President and Noho B. Sangma, Secretary of the Managing Committee of School, in 1960. The H.E. School was first functioned in Ampati Baptist Church Building. The H.E. School was provincialized in 1-9-1988.
After declaration of Statehood to Meghalaya, the first Chief Minister Capt. W.A. Sangma, in his August visit to the General Conference of Garo National Council in 1947 promised to create a Civil Sub-Division for administrative convenience and public of the area in general, to the memorandum submitted by the primary center of GNC. The demand was immediately fulfilled by creating and Administrative Unit was formally declared open by Shri Sanford Marak Hon'ble Minister of Health on 14-8-1976. The Administrative Unit was upgraded to civil sub-division of 15­10-1982 and its Headquarter was shifted to Ampati. 18-7-1987.
The general meeting for establishment of College at Ampati was convened in 1980 but due to lack of fund the proposal could not materialized, and in 1995 Shri Nolidi S. Daring, as convener and Dr. Mukul Sangma, MLA as Chairman held a public meeting for opening a 10+2 section at Ampati High School. And after a gap of 5 years higher secondary section was started from 1st July 2001. The General meeting for opening a college was called again the third time, and this time more enthusiastic young members joined in the meeting and the college could at last opened with Mr. Asis S. Daring as Principal. The college is functioning for the time being under the Sub-Division Headquarters.


TOPOGRAPHY OF AMPATI

The District is bounded on the north by Selsella and Rongram Community & Rural  Development Block; on the south by Sherpur and Jamalpur District of Bangladesh and Dalu and Gambegre Community & Rural Development Blocks, on the east by Dalu and Gambegre Community & Rural Development  Blocks and on the west by Dhubri and Kurigram District of Assam and Bangladesh respectively. As a natural boundary the District has the river Kalu (also known as Ganol) on the north and providing a long demarcation line to Dhubri district and Selsella while the river Jinjiram flows along the Western boundary of the District. Physically the area of the District extends upto the 11 kilometers short of Tura on the east; Mankachar on the north. The District has approximately 35 kilometers of international boundary with Bangladesh on the south and western side. Nearly one third of the total number of villages of the sub-division is declared as border villages by the Border Area Development Department.





West: Dhubri and Kurigram district of Assam and Bangladesh respectively.
East: Dalu and Gambegre Development Blocks.
North: Selsella and Rongram Development Blocks.
South: Sherpur and Jamalpur District of Bangladesh and Dalu & Gambegre Development Block (Meghalaya, India).


Nearly one third of the total area may be said to have been covered with hills. While the rest is, literally a plain region dotted with small hillocks here and there. A large and continuous strip of plain land stretches from Garobadha towards Mankachar extending upto Mahendraganj and Gopinath Killa along the border of Dhubri District of Assam and Bangladesh.


The hill regions, on the other hand, begin from 11 kilometer short of Tura on the east and cover Damalgiri, Okkapara, Mellim and Salmanpara areas on the south. These hills and hills ranges occur in the east and southern parts of the Sub-Division and gradually slope down towards north and west and ultimately converge with the bigger plain region.

CREATION OF AMPATI CIVIL SUB-DIVISION:

In the interest of General Public of the area it was created as Betasing Administrative Unit on 14th of August, 1976 and functioned at the Betasing Block headquarter. Finally it was created as a full fledged Civil Sub-Division on 15th of October, 1982 in the banner/name of Ampati Civil Sub-Division and continued to function at the Betasing Block headquarter. On August, 1988 it was shifted to its own Sub-Divisional Office Complex at Ampati, West Garo Hills.


The sub-division has a population of 1,51,941 (2001 census). The hill region is mostly inhabited by the Garos while in the foothills there are Hajongs, Koch and Bengalis.


The Sub-Divisional Headquarter is also connected to all the neighboring places including one important trade center Mankachar of lower Assam, District Dhubri.


The Sub-Division is inhabited by the following communities:
1. Garo,
2. Bengali,
3. Muslim,
4. Koch,
5. Hajong,
6. Hindi speaking people and
7. Rabha.


It shares international boundaries with Bangladesh which stretches upto 35 KM. While it share interstate boundary with Assam.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma In the interest of general public inaugurated the South West Garo Hills  on 7 August 2012 at its headquarters, Ampati. With the inaguration of South West Garo Hills District the number of districts in the state has gone up to 11(eleven). It is located at the Latitude of 25º27.505 and Longitude of 089º56.456 and is 52 km away from the district headquarter Tura of West Garo Hills.The Southwest Garo Hills is carved out of West Garo Hills district and the areas under its jurisdiction are Betasing and Zikzak C&RD Blocks, villages from under Garobadha GS circle of Selsella block, Okkapara Songma GS circle and Chengkomgre GS circle under Gambegre block and Dokonggre GS circle under Rongram block.
